This ice cream shop −one of the oldest in the Windy City− is named for its signature Rainbow Cone. Trial and error revealed the winning combination of chocolate, strawberry, Palmer House (New York Vanilla with cherries and walnuts) and pistachio ice creams and orange sherbet.

2. Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream

If you’re looking for low-calorie or low-fat ice cream, you might want to head elsewhere. This shop’s ice cream is made with rich Wisconsin cream, pure sugar cane, and real vanilla, cocoa, cherries, coffee,  caramel, and peppermint. Flavors range from the traditional (French Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry) to the unusual (Cinnamon, Cotton Candy Twist, Scotch Ale Carmel Crunch).

3. Bobtail Ice Cream Company

Established in 2004, this brand says it combines “Grandpa’s time-tested product and small-town ideals with fresh energy and an urban touch.” Its hard-pack ice cream comes in classic, seasonal and locally-inspired ice cream flavors, such as Mint Chip, Summer Peach, and Daley Addiction (vanilla ice cream, butter fudge swirl).

Don’t let the name fool you. In addition to candy, this shop sells ice cream made with fresh, all-natural, and Kosher ingredients. And its waffle cones are made in-house. Flavors include Butter Pecan, Coconut, and Cheesecake, and customers have their choice of more than eight toppings.

5. Black Dog Gelato

This shop’s specialty is gourmet gelato and sorbet made with unique ingredient combinations dreamt up by its owner, a former pastry chef. Flavors include Goat Cheese Cashew Caramel, Mexican Hot Chocolate, and Sesame Fig Chocolate Chip. The shop also serves up gelato cookie sandwiches and freshly made sodas.
